Being Proud of "Gay" Labels
Being in the homosexual community almost always involves experiencing aspects of bigotry towards gays and lesbians in general or personal attacks throughout life. It is quite certain that there is no way to control what other people say about any issue. Therefore, these attacks of bigotry are something that individuals in the gay community must come to terms with at some point.
There are a wide variety of ways that this can manifest itself. The labels that bigots use are numerous and can be quite nasty. To list these labels would be futile because it continues to grow regardless of what anyone does to counteract it. Suffice it to say, we have all heard these labels at some point in life, regardless of being a homosexual, straight or otherwise.
For some people these labels are very offensive. That is the intent of bigotry after all, to offend and to dis-enfranchise. There is another option that has worked for a great many people within the gay community. Instead of being offended by the labels, own the labels, be proud of the labels. This takes the power away from the bigots in our society and places that power back in your own hands.
It doesn't matter what minority group, culture, or orientation a person might be, if a person takes the power away from these labels and owns that power instead, the bigot loses every single time. Also, another potential avenue is to just filter out the negativity and not even allow it to impact life whatsoever.
Be proud, be happy, and most of all own who and what you are!
