Pope Declares Gay Marriage an "Ideology of Evil"

In Memory and Identity written by Pope John Paul II, he declares that gay marriage is part of a new "ideology of evil" that is a threat to the world. (Source: Wired News) The gay community should be amazed and proud to be one of the targets of the Pope in his latest book. To be such an important issue that the Pope must write about it must mean current efforts are making forward movements towards equal rights.

This declaration by the Pope might be disheartening to some. I believe it should be a sign that we still live in a very divided world; there is still much work to be done. That the symbol of religious leadership in the Catholic world is against and openly attacks the gay community should be a sure sign that the fight for equal rights for homosexuals is far from over. This will only embolden those forces against gay marriage.

In my research I found a discourse regarding Pope John Paul II's longstanding views on granting equal rights, including civil unions. These views are definitely not something new from this Pope or the Catholic Church.

His new comments only show how much fear there still remains in society regarding not only gay marriages but fear of the entire gay community itself. The gay community has made significant progress and can withstand the current backlash that is created from making that progress. To recoil from these harsh words would be a defeat. However, to stand in defiance against them wherever there is a necessity is what is important.

And you can Quote me on that. The Quotable Queer

  • But don't you really think that the church itself is the true axis of evil? I mean, it's the church that creates discourse among the masses. If the church wouold dissolve, so would the so-called "holy wars". In the words of John Lennon, "Imagine there's no countries, it isn't hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion, too."

  • I believe that the terms moral values, family, compassionate, and even the word 'Christian' has been used as a smokescreen to camouflage the real agenda of a group of Republicans trying to pass a budget that favors the richest and punishes the poorest and most vulnerable in our society. Why were so many fooled during the election?? Have we forgotten that 'actions speak louder than words'? meg
