President Backs Constitution Amendment to Ban Gay Marriage

Here is an excerpt from the President of the United States, George W. Bush, as he speaks to the nation and to the world during the annual State of the Union Address.
Our second great responsibility . . . is to honor and to pass along the values that sustain a free society. Government is not the source of these values, but government should never undermine them. Because marriage is a sacred institution and the foundation of society, it should not be redefined by activist judges. For the good of families, children, and society, I support a Constitution Amendment to protect the institution of marriage.
The proverbial line in the sand has been drawn by President Bush. Recent stories of the President backing down from a Constitutional Amendment were inaccurate, misleading, or he simply changed his mind.

Whatever your views, it appears that the ultra-conservative and religious right have taken over the White House and managed to flex their muscle by including the gay marriage ban in the agenda of the Bush administration.

I can see how some people in the gay community would not oppose such an amendment. I know some of them personally. However, anyone who believes that same-sex relationships shouldn't be given the same respect and equality as heterosexual relationships does not believe that homosexuals deserve the same rights as everyone else. That means these people hold the belief that being gay is like being a second-hand citizen.

I for one find this idea absolutely proposterous. To believe that anyone else can decrease the value of any group of people is disgusting. We are all individuals; we all have that in common. Why are our individual values less important than someone else's? Our individual values are absolutely equal in importance to the values of anyone else.

Values of two or more groups may contradict each other; that much is absolutely true. I don't see how two people being married and living their lives by their own values has any negative impact whatsoever with anyone else's life and values. If that truly is the case, than what are they so scared about that they have to write down limiting gay rights into the U.S. Constitution?

And you can Quote me on that. The Quotable Queer
