Support of Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels

Filed under: Gay Life, Gay Culture, Gay Politics — Gay Life @ 12:41 pm

This is my letter to Governor Daniels in support of his public policy statement giving discrimination protection for Indiana State employees with regards to sexual orientation and gender identity.

I just wanted to thank you for reaching out to protect the homosexual and transgendered communities through anti-discrimination protection in your EEO policy statement. It is a grand gesture that I know our communities will not forget that you have supported.

Also, your support of Councilor Scott Keller for his support of Proposal 68 is another amazing sign of how your administration assists in broadening the reach of the Republican Party.

Continued and steady leadership along these lines will defeat the radical right wing of the Republican Party in the longrun.

Again, your support for equal protection and equal treatment will not go unnoticed by our community. I have already been sending messages out to the community to assist and support you in what you do.

Thank you for rising above the rhetoric and the bigotry that still exists in Indiana. You are indeed helping to make a stand against these anti-American forces.

Sincerely,

I urge you to contact the Indiana Governor on his stand against discrimination. You can contact him at http://www.in.gov/gov/contact.html or you can call and leave him a message by calling (317)232-4567 or sending a letter to:

Governor Mitch Daniels
Indiana State House
200 West Washington Street
Indianapolis, Indiana 46204-2797

We all need to support the efforts of Republicans who stand up to the religious right wing of the Republican Party. If we don’t, then none of them will ever support the GBLT community in the future.

Had Enough of “Up or Down Vote” Rhetoric

Filed under: Gay Life, Gay Politics — Gay Life @ 11:24 pm

President Bush’s second term has passed the curious 100-day mark that the media seems to be just eating up for all the May ratings they can garner.

One item that President Bush has continuously repeated throughout these 100 days is that all his judicial nominees deserve an “up or down vote” in the Senate. If anyone takes even a secondary look at this issue, it seems pretty clear that this rhetoric is simple propaganda . . . simple being the keyword.

The Republicans control The White House. The Republicans control the Senate. Therefore, any nominees presented to the Senate by the President are almost inevitable to receive the majority vote by the Senators, considering 55 of them are Republicans and only 50 Senators (taking into account a tie breaker vote from Vice President and President of the Senate Dick Cheney) are necessary to approve any nomination.

It is absolutely brilliant strategy to use a very simple and clear message like the “up or down vote” line. It certainly, at one point, had some traction with the American people. That support is definitely in the minority opinion (i.e. the religious right).

Bush’s stance on his nominees even seems to be a logical policy, that is until one takes into account the complete control over the executive and legislative branches by one party. That is why the filibuster is a critical piece in the checks and balances that our country was founded in order to avoid any one person or party to have complete and absolute power.

The problem with a simple message that never changes is that it gets old. Old is boring, especially in politics. If the Republicans devised fresh, simple and easily digestible messages about this issue, the support for the measure would be higher than it is currently.

Personally, everytime I hear the rhetoric, it strengthens my resolve to fight against it, and fight I will!
